Dog Allergies Relief

To my utter amazement I recently found out that a lot of people don’t even realize that dogs, like humans, have allergies too. This is such a natural occurrence but I guess they thought it was just a human problem. Well the fact is that dog allergies relief is a very affordable and available treatment for this all too present affliction in man’s best friend.

First a little background: basically a dog gets allergies as a reaction to allergens and antigens which are present in the air. This is just like humans, essentially. Now, often this will result in itchy skin for the afflicted pup. It could also manifest itself in sneezing, wheezing, and coughing. Their system is allergic and this is its natural reaction, however something often has to be done about this on occasion. Remember that you always consult your vet on these matters.

Anti-inflammatory Relief

One form of dog allergies relief is to provide anti-inflammatory medicine. Now, this does not treat the underlying condition. Instead it may relieve the pup of his or her external reactions, such as coughing or itching.

It involves any one of or combination of: steroids, antihistamines, and possibly a supplement of fatty acids in addition to one of the previous two treatments. Your veterinarian will provide more guidance on this, but you may end up having to administer either orally or even through injection.

Shampoo

Surprisingly you may be able to really give a lot of relief to your dog by utilizing a shampoo therapy. Scrub, scrub, scrub him down on a much more regular basis than you are already doing. (I’m sure he’ll love it.) You can’t just use any shampoo though; it has to be hypoallergenic. This may or may not work to slow the absorption of antigens and allergens through the skin. While it is not completely known whether this is one way that they actually get in, a lot of people believe it is so.

Hypersensitization

You and your vet can try to inject some antigens into your dog in an effort to pin down just exactly what he or she is allergic to. Once that is found out, then you can take up a program of injecting him with a tiny amount of that allergen so that he can build up a strong immunity to it. This is like how we humans get our chicken pox and tetanus shots. Dogs, too, will learn how to protect themselves from it at this level and the different body composure will then (hopefully) translate to the end of the actual allergy.

As I said, this form of dog allergies relief is not foolproof, but it is the ideal way to go. However, you will end up having to pay the most for this treatment. It is also not successful in about half of all cases. And also if your puppy is young it is somewhat likely that even if the relief works he will develop a new allergy later in life.

Food Allergy

While this is not so common, some dogs do develop an allergy to certain proteins and meats in their diet after a long time. In this case you’ll have to test him out with a certain hypoallergenic diet. If you go this route then it is very important that you not let him eat anything except that special diet at all during the testing period. If you do then the results will be worthless.

The bottom line is that dog allergies relief is still a growing and evolving field. Many great breakthroughs have been made but I suspect we will continue to see it become better as time marches on and more and more people take a keener interest in their pup’s health.
